The Spyder4Elite color calibration tool is Datacolor’s premium color calibration tool for anyone who demands the most accurate color for their work. A highly flexible and versatile all-in-one tool, the Spyder4Elite can be used to calibrate everything from monitors to laptops, TV screens and projectors, even iPhones and iPads! The unit is capable of calibrating both wide and normal gamut displays, due to its advanced full-spectrum 7 color sensor.

User Experience/Ease of Use
I found the Spyder4Elite simple to use straight out of the box. Once the software is installed and the unit is plugged into a USB port, on-screen directions take the user through the process of calibration from beginning to end. The directions were clear and easy to follow. The software directed me through positioning the unit, adjusting my screen’s brightness and calibrating my display.

Upon conclusion of the process, I was able to view the old profile vs. the new profile and also a detailed report of my monitor color profile. There is a sensor on the unit that detects and adjusts for ambient light, so I did not have to worry about shrouding the room in complete darkness for accurate calibration.

After initially adjusting the color, I felt like my monitor was a bit “off”, but that is certainly due to the fact that my eyes were used to the old profile and resisted when the profile changed after calibration. As I am a photographer, the proof of accurate color profile for me will always be the final print and how well it matches my screen (although I understand that different printers use slightly different profiles, accurate print color is my main goal). The color of the 100 prints I ordered shortly after calibrating was true to the color I saw on my screen, so I believe the Spyder4Elite did its job well!

Although not the must “fun” on the list of gear, a calibration tool is a must-have for anyone who is serious about photography or any task that requires accurate color. I highly recommend the Spyder4Elite for high quality, accurate color calibration. The simple, clear instructions, the quality of the unit, and the beautiful results I obtain make it a true winner in my book.
