Nikon Announces D3200 Entry-Level DSLR
by Allison Johnson -  4/18/2012

Nikon took the wraps off the D3200 today, replacing the D3100 in the entry-level DSLR category. It takes a big jump up to a Nikon D320024 megapixel resolution, adds 1080 HD video and offers compatibility with a nifty optional wireless adapter.

The first difference you’ll notice between the D3100 and the D3200 is the resolution gap. D3100 offered a 14.2 megapixel DX format CMOS sensor – the D3200’s isn’t any bigger physically, but offers a big 24.2 megapixels of resolution. Coupled with an EXPEED 3 processor, the system is capable of burst shooting at up to 4 fps and offers a native ISO range of 100-6400 expandable up to 12800. An 11-point AF system is on board, providing continuous AF throughout video recording.

The sensor isn’t the only piece of hardware getting a resolution upgrade. The 3.0-inch LCD now has 921k-dots of resolution, bumped up from a low 230k-dot in the D3100. The D3200 is equipped with an HDMI out port and a microphone jack, improving your odds of capturing good audio with your 1080p HD video clips (24 or 30 fps).

Offered as an optional accessory is a wireless adapter, designed specifically for the D3200. It hooks into the camera’s USB port and will wirelessly transfer files from the D3200 to Android phones or tablets running a free app. Available in May, the app can also be used to trigger the shutter remotely. It will display a live view from the camera to the device, allowing the shooter to frame a shot before firing the shutter. A similar app for iOS devices is expected to follow sometime in the fall.Nikon D3200

Also introduced is a new AF Nikkor 28mm f/1.8  lens, expanding Nikon’s single focal length f/1.8 lens options even further.

Pricing and Availability
The Nikon D3200 with 18-55mm VR lens will become available later this month for $699.95. The WU-1a wireless adapter (currently only compatible with D3200) will cost an extra $59.95, and the 28mm f/1.8 is expected to arrive in late May 2012 for $699.95.
