Instagram Acquired by Facebook for $1 Billion

Facebook announces today plans to purchase photo-sharing app Instagram to the tune of $1 billion. Through an official release, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg stressed that Instagram would be maintained as a separate app. Users will still be able to post photos to other social networks (Twitter, for example). Photos won’t be automatically published to Facebook, and users will still be able to follow and be followed by Instagram-ers outside of their own Facebook friends networks.

Instagram only recently became available to Android users. Previously, the photo sharing-app was available only on the iPhone. Instagram is the highly popular, highly addictive platform for snapping, sharing and “hipster-izing” photos with a variety of retro filters. Some Instagram fans have taken to Twitter to express distrust in Facebook’s intentions, concerned that app functions and interface will undergo significant unwanted changes. Gizmodo and Mashable have posted tips for protecting your catalog of Instagram photos if you plan to bail out before Facebook takes control.
