Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS: Ready for Summer Action
by Grant Hatchimonji -  6/20/2011

Summer vacation can be a hazardous time for your digital camera. The pool presents the issue of water damage, the beach threatens to fill your camera's nooks and crannies with sand, and if you're especially adventurous (or clumsy) you could even be at risk of dropping your camera from harmful heights. And that's where the Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS comes in.

With the Optio WG-1 GPS, you can be free to enjoy and take snapshots of your summer vacation without having to worry about the welfare of your camera. The device is waterproof in depths of up to 33 feet, so feel free to take some shots in -- or even under -- the water. The WG-1 GPS is also shockproof to withstand falls up to 5 feet, and dust proof to keep any dust or sand out. And if you don't subscribe to the idea of going somewhere warm and sunny for summer vacation, the camera is coldproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit.

Pentax Optio WG-1 GPSYou don't even need to be worried about throwing it into your suitcase or travel bag with the rest of your belongings, even if you're carrying around a sack of bricks (seriously, what kind of vacation are you going on?); the WG-1 GPS has a rock-solid crushproof design that Pentax boasts can withstand "weight force up to 220 pounds."

The WG-1 is as user-friendly as it gets, with a roomy, 2.7-inch LCD display and most of the picture settings handled automatically. Between that and the ruggedness of the camera, you just might be able to trust your children to take some shots with it.

And if you're a real jet-setter, the WG-1 GPS will make sure you never miss a beat. As the name implies, it has a built-in GPS sensor that records position data when shooting still images and updates the internal clock to match the local time of the location, all while storing the data in a log on the camera's SD card. The camera even comes with Windows-compatible software that helps you access GPS-compatible services like Google Maps or Google Earth.

With solid image quality thanks to a 14-megapixel CCD sensor, the WG-1 GPS is perfect for recording memories of your summer vacation and is currently available for $399.95 MSRP. For more of our thoughts on the Pentax Optio WG-1 GPS, check out our full review!
