Canon PowerShot A3300 IS First Look

Canon's "A" series digital cameras have earned an amazing level of customer loyalty with their reasonable prices, dependably excellent image quality, reliable performance, toughness/durability and ease of use. The new PowerShot A3300 IS does not deviate from that winning formula.

The A3300 IS is an easy to use and easily pocketable 16 megapixel digital camera with a 5x (28mm-140mm equivalent) zoom, a 3.0-inch LCD screen and a 720p HD video mode. Savvy consumers like compact auto-exposure only point-and-shoots because these simple-to-use, feature-rich little cameras nicely complement their other hi-tech toys.

Spring is here (at least in the Ohio Valley) after a very long, cold and thoroughly depressing winter. Much of the country had record snow falls, which provide the opportunity to shoot winter wonderland photographs, but here in the Ohio Valley we don't get enough snow to inspire good winter pictures. Winter in Louisville, Kentucky (for photographers) is all about dull gray skies, bare trees, deserted streets, patches of dirty snow, salt glazed roadways, melting ice, weather worn litter and mud.

It's wonderful to finally start seeing the sun again. With the arrival of better weather, many consumers will be thinking about a new camera for an upcoming vacation or considering the purchase of a camera as a graduation, Mother's Day, or Father's Day gift. I've only had the new Canon PowerShot A3300 IS for a few days, but it seems to be a very nice choice. I'll go into more detail in the full review, but so far, the A3300 IS seems like it would be an ideal first digital camera, an excellent choice for the primary family camera, and a very good choice for travelers who want a small, relatively tough, lightweight, fairly inexpensive "go anywhere" digicam.

The A3300 IS lets the user capture beautiful images and highly detailed HD video clips with very little effort - no matter his or her level of photographic competence. Portraits, landscapes, outdoor images in various lighting situations, nighttime shots, and indoor pictures can all be captured easily when users shoot in the A3300 IS's Smart Auto mode. Just set the A3300 IS to Smart Auto and then concentrate on capturing your subject at the decisive moment - the camera will automatically analyze the scene in front of the lens and then select the appropriate setting from 32 built-in special scene modes.

In addition to its small footprint, 720p video mode, 3.0-inch LCD monitor, and nifty Smart Auto mode, the DIGIC IV driven Canon PowerShot A3300 IS also provides OIS (optical image stabilization), Face Detection AF, Automatic Red-Eye Correction, Live View Control, and a selection of Creative Filters. Menus are logical and simply navigated and the controls are familiar, well laid out, and easily accessed by right handed shooters. I've only had the Canon Powershot A3300 IS for a short while, but so far, I like this camera. That's not to say that I haven't noticed any faults, but I'll cover those in the full review.
