Behind the stylish exterior, the S1 offers a generous 5x optical zoom lens covering a range equivalent to 28-140mm. Sensor-shift SR image stabilization is available to help keep image blur under control. Digital stabilization is also available to raise ISO sensitivity in low light conditions.

The Pentax S1 features a 14 megapixel sensor, 2.7-inch LCD comprised of 230k-dots and in-camera dynamic range control to help even out exposure in high-contrast situations. Video recording is available at 1280 x 720 resolution at 30 frames per second. Nine in-camera digital filters are offered including toy camera and retro modes. Face detection, Auto Picture mode and compatibility with an optional infrared remote control are all available to S1 users.

We had a look at a pre-production S1 back at CES. The camera has a nice enameled look with rounded edges. It felt solid and sturdy, and the control layout was everything we expect from an Optio.

Pricing and availability
The Pentax Optio S1 will be available for $199.95 later this month. It will be sold in black, chrome or (minty) green.
