First Kodak had it, then JVC. Now it appears Sony has the touch as the Handycam maker today announced its new Bloggie Touch pocket HD camcorder.
The Bloggie Touch is a stark departure from the previous generation bloggie. Gone is the innovative swivel lens of the PM5 and optical zoom of the bulkier CM5. They've both been replaced by a three-inch touchscreen LCD and a form factor and size closely resembling a cell phone.
Finally, gone to is the "bloggie" moniker. In a sign of that Sony's little camcorder is all grown up, it is now officially the "Bloggie," with a capital "B." For those keeping track, what started as the "Webbie," and then became the "bloggie," is now the "Bloggie."
The new Bloggie Touch will shoot 1920 x 1080 resolution MP4 video at 30fps (1080/30p) as well as 1280 x 720 60p and 1280 x 720 60p. In addition, it will take 12.8 megapixel stills via its Sony Exmore CMOS sensor and F2.8 wide-angle lens.
There will be two models: the 8GB MHS-TS20 and the 4GB MHS-TS10, both sporting embedded memory. The Bloggie Touch will come in two colors, silver and black.
It also has a host of shooting features, including digital image stabilization, adjustable screen for both vertical and horizontal shooting, 4x digital zoom, and Auto Macro to retain focus on objects up to four inches away.
For connections, it has a built-in USB arm and HDMI out. It also comes with new Bloggie software that connects to Sony's Personal Space for online sharing and direct uploads to Flickr, Facebook, YouTube and other sharing sites.
I spent some time with the Bloggie Touch at a Sony press event, and I came away impressed with the design. The new pocket camcorder features a brushed metal body that is a huge improvement from the plastic shell of the older models. I cannot stress enough how much it captures the modern smartphone look and feel. At a glance, I'd swear it was an Android handset.
It's also truly pocket sized. Without the benefit of other pocket camcorders to compare it to directly, it still seems safe to claim the Bloggie Touch will be the most portable, if not the smallest and thinnest on market when it ships this fall.
Pricing and Availibility
The Bloggie Touch will ship in October. The 4GB model will cost $180 and the 8GB Bloggie will cost $200.
