Kodak has the touch, Intros PlayTouch pocket camcorder
by Jamison Cush -  8/22/2010

We really liked Kodak's pocket HD camcorders at DigitalCameraReview, particularly the Zi8 and PlaySport. Both shot great video (for a pocket camcorder, at least) and the Zi8 is one of the only pocket HD camcorders with an external mic jack.

We're pleased to see Kodak continue with the line, this time adding a little touch with the Kodak PlayTouch video camera.Kodak PlayTouch

For specs and video quality, it seems Kodak is sticking with what worked in previous Kodak camcorders, and that's 1080p HD video, presumably at 30 fps. The biggest addition is in navigation, now handled via a three-inch capacitive LCD touchscreen, up from 2.5 in the Zi8 and 2 in the PlaySport. Also, like the Zi8 and PlaySport, the PlayTouch will shoot 5MP stills. There is no word from Kodak on price or availabilty

Regular DCR readers know we love the little extras. So kudos to Kodak for including the HDMI cable and keeping the external mic jack. The touch navigation might also be a step up from the PlaySport menu, which we described as having "cryptic" icons in the DCR PlaySport review.

The question now becomes, will touch be enough? Kodak faces new competition in pocket space from Panasonic, Samsung and Sanyo, not to mention Sony with its innovative bloggie line. And though they've been quiet as of late, I'm sure the folks behind the Flip aren't ready to concede any ground in the market they essentially invented.

Rest assured, however, that as soon as we have a review unit, we'll let you know if you should make room in your pocket for the Kodak PlayTouch.
