Toshiba and Trek establish forum to promote SD memory card with Wi-Fi
by Andy Stanton -  6/22/2010

Toshiba Corporation has announced the launch of a forum to promote its new SD memory card that includes Wi-Fi functionality. The forum, the "Standard Promotion Forum for Memory Cards Embedding Wireless LAN," is founded by Toshiba and Singapore-based Trek 2000 International Ltd.

The new memory card is designed to bring Wi-Fi functionality to digital still cameras that have an SDHC slot. Once in the camera, a card can recognize and communicate with the same type of card in another camera and users can exchange photographs quickly and easily. It also allows users to upload and download photographs to and from a computer without using a cable or physically transferring the memory card.

The new card conforms to the SD standard, has an 8GB capacity and supports 802.11b/g. It can transfer both JPEG and RAW images.

Currently, the major player in this area is Eye-Fi, whose Pro X2, an 8GB Class 6 SDHC card with Wi-Fi functionality, was reviewed this past April by Digital Camera Review.
