The Flip is back. The gadget that started the pocket camcorder craze has evolved into the SlideHD, an ultra-portable HD camcorder with a pop-up, or sliding, 3-inch touchscreen that's stayed true to the familiar Flip form factor.
The SlideHD is very similar to the Flip MinoHD in that it shoots 720p/30fps h.264 footage, has a flip-out USB, HDMI out, fixed-focus lens and an internal lithium battery good for about two hours of shooting time. With 16 GB or four hours of footage, capacity has been doubled from the MinoHD, and the SlideHD is a bit larger than its predecessor. Still missing, but found in competing devices like the Samsung U20 and Sony bloggie, are optical zoom and image stabilization.
With extra girth comes the SlideHD's defining feature: a sliding 400 x 240 pixel screen that pops up from the pocket camcorder for angled viewing. When the screen is deployed, the SlideHD resembles a portable media player. Stereo speakers and a "slide strip" touch sensor bar for footage control are underneath.
The SlideHD is currently available for $280 on Flip's website and brick and mortar retail outlets.
