Fujifilm launches "Real 3D System" for release in September 2009
by Allison Johnson -  7/22/2009

Fujifilm announced today that its 3D imaging system will be arriving in stores this September. The first camera to feature this technology will be the FinePix Real 3D W1, sporting twin Fujinon lenses to create true 3D still images and movies. Images can be displayed in their full 3D glory with a FinePix Real 3D V1 picture viewer, an 8.0 inch display developed as part of this 3D system.

Fuji has also developed technology to allow for 3D image printing. They plan to offer printers to those who purchase the FinePix Real 3D W1, but won't put them in wide commercial release just yet.

One camera, two lenses and Real 3D
The Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W1 will feature two Fujinon 3x optical zoom lenses with a pair of matching CCD sensors. A 3D image is created by merging data from each of the sensors, a process made possible by a new "RP (Real Photo) Processor 3D." Images are displayed on a specially designed 2.8 inch 3D/2D LCD on the rear of the camera. Users will be able to view images in 3D while shooting.

The FinePix Real 3D W1 will offer some creative flexibility even when shooting in 3D. "Interval Shooting" will allow the photographer to capture two images from different viewpoints as in a moving vehicle. 3D images can also be manually adjusted via a function called "Parallax Control" as they are being viewed on the LCD or filmed.

Flexible 2D shooting options
Not only capable of 3D shooting, the W1 will also offer some interesting 2D shooting options as well. A dual capture mode will take two pictures simultaneously, while "Tele+Wide Shooting" will allow users to photograph a subject close-up and from a wider angle at the same time. Dual Capture Shooting mode will utilize both of the imaging systems of the W1 and allow the user to take two simultaneous shots with different settings.

Ergonomically speaking, the camera is designed to be handled with two hands. Buttons like the 2D/3D switch have been placed on both sides on the back panel for easier operation.

The 3D system wouldn't be complete without a way to show off images at their fullest potential. The FinePix Real 3D V1 picture viewer does just that. It's an 8.0 inch, 480,000 dot LCD panel with touch-enabled operation capable of displaying 3D and 2D images and movies for a captive audience. The picture viewer will include a remote control and features slideshow playback, MicroThumbnailView, and "Picture Search" function.

Pricing and availability
Fujifilm has not yet announced a price for the 3D system, but the FinePix Real 3D W1 and FinePix Real 3D V1 will both become available in September.
