Five Olympus lenses now Micro Four Thirds compatible

The list of lens options for the only Micro Four Thirds camera currently on the market, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1, got a lot longer today: Micro Four Thirds partner Olympus announced this morning that firmware updates for five of its Zuiko lenses will "ensure the compatibility of these lenses when used with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 camera."

The following lenses are supported under the current update:

G1 owners can download the appropriate updates as well as installation instructions from Olympus's support page.

As noted, Olympus claims that the updates will provide "compatibility" with the G1 (and presumably, other Micro Four Thirds cameras as they become available), but given the confusion surrounding what functions are and are not enabled when using the Four Thirds to Micro Four Thirds adapter required for this application, we're not sure at this point whether this means full metering and auto focus compatibility for all five lenses. We're working on an answer from Olympus and will update this story as additional info is made available.

In the meantime, we're hoping Olympus has a Micro Four Thirds compatibility update in the works for its ridiculously large Zuiko 14-35mm f/2.0 SWD – if only for the amusement value of mounting such a huge lens to a tiny camera like the G1...
