Samsung announced the follow-up model to its current flagship ultracompact this morning. Building on the popular NV24HD, the Samsung TL34HD brings more touch screen technology to the world of high-resolution ultracompacts with the latest iteration of Samsung's Smart Touch interface.

Utilizing a 3-inch HVGA LCD, Smart Touch 2.0 allows users to navigate the TL34HD's menus by touching the screen directly (previous Smart Touch cameras relied on screen-side button arrays instead).

In addition to its touch screen, the TL34HD brings a whopping 14.7 megapixels of resolution on a sensor that's also capable of 720p high-definition video capture. Coupled with Samsung's new DRIM Engine processor, high-sensitivity shooting at up to ISO 4800 (at three megapixels) is available, and the manufacturer's press release also promises shooting speed improvements as a result of the new processor.

Other processor-side features include the latest high-tech shooting modes: Face Detection, Smile Shot (which will only take a picture when subjects are smiling), and Blink Detection.

A Schneider-Kreuznach lens with 28mm wide-angle coverage handles optical duties. Covering a 3.6x range, the TL34HD's lens goes slightly beyond expectations for an ultracompact on the telephoto end as well. Optical image stabilization promises blur-free shots throughout the zoom range.

Stylistically, the new TL follows in the footsteps of Samsung's previous-generation "New Vision" (or NV) series, with a sleek, minimalist all-metal body. A red accented silver version adds some color to the mix, however, moving away from the black-on-black color schemes of the NV cameras.

As noted, HD shooting is one of the TL34HD's headline features, and users can further expand the TL34HD's high-def capabilities with Samsung's optional HDMI Consumer Electronics Control cradle. The dock allows the TL34HD to be quickly and easily connected to an HDTV, and the cradle allows Samsung HDTV owners to control camera playback functions via their television's remote control.

Look for the TL34HD to begin showing up in stores in September, with an MSRP of $329.95.
