Western Digital spins 1TB and 2TB backup solutions

Not to be outdone by other recent high-capacity storage system announcements, Western Digital has released 1TB and 2TB versions of its My Book Mirror Edition.

Western Digital My Book Mirror Edition

Ideal for those needing or wanting more data security, the new two-drive external storage system automatically backs up all data written to the device: the Mirror's default RAID 1 configuration provides a single-box backup solution, mirroring all saved data onto both of the system's drives. If one of the My Book Mirror Edition's hard disk drives should happen to fail, the contents of the drive are still secure on its counterpart.

For those more interested in maximum capacity than maximum security, the dual drives can be easily converted to a RAID 0 configuration – allowing the full volume of storage space to function as a single drive. (Mirrored configuration effectively halves the apparent available storage space, making the 2TB My Book appear as a 1TB drive.)

Requiring no cooling fan, the My Book Mirror Edition is both quiet and eco-friendly. WD's GreenPower drives, which consume about one-third less energy than conventional HDDs, come standard in the My Book Mirror Edition.

My Book Mirror Edition drives are available immediately at "select retailers" and via Western Digital's website. The 1TB retails at $289.99, with the 2TB model running $549.99.
