Kodak Takes #1 Digital Camera Sales Spot Away From Sony
by  -  2/3/2005

According to research frim IDC, Eastman Kodak sold 4.9 million digital cameras in 2004, compared to 4.3 million by Sony. Canon came in third with 3.5 million, followed by Olympus and HP with 2.3 and 1.8 million respecively.

The IDC numbers are actually causing quite a stir though. Another research firm, NPD Group, has Canon as the industry leader. So why the difference? IDC measures camera shipments to retailers and NPD looks at actual sales. The problem is that NPD doesn't cover all stores, like the nation's largest retailer, Wal Mart.

IDC credits Kodak's growth largely to their excelent product lines in the mid and low cost market segments.
