Sony has announced the NEX-5R, the latest member of the NEX line of interchangeable lens digital cameras that feature a small, lightweight design and a large APS-C sized sensor. The new camera adds hybrid autofocus technology plus Wi-Fi connectivity.
The NEX-5R’s body is the size of a compact camera, weighing only 276 grams, including battery and memory card. It has a 16.1 megapixel APS CMOS HD sensor, the same size of the sensors found in most DSLR cameras. The camera can be used with all E-mount lenses produced by Sony and other manufacturers, as well as other types of lenses if used with the appropriate adapter. The camera features a new fully programmable control dial and function button, a switchable on-screen digital level gauge that helps keep horizons level, and a high definition touchscreen LCD that can flip upwards 180 degrees for self-portraits. The camera can take full HD (1920 x 1080) movies at 60 frames per second and has an auto slow shutter feature that adds extra detail to low-light clips.
The NEX-5R is the first of Sony’s interchangeable lens cameras to feature “Fast Hybrid AF” autofocus technology, combining phase-detection and contrast-detection methods to improve the speed and accuracy of the camera’s autofocus system. This hybrid technology utilizes 99 phase-detection focus points to detect a subject’s distance and quickly lock focus on it, and then utilizes contrast-detection autofocus to confirm fine details. When the camera is in fast continuous shooting mode, the camera will switch automatically to phase detection autofocus, which will enable it to accurately track fast-moving subjects.
The camera includes built-in Wi-Fi, which allows photos and videos to be transferred wirelessly to a smartphone or tablet. Content can be directly uploaded from the camera to Facebook with Sony’s new PlayMemories Camera Apps platform, which will give users the opportunity to download different apps for the camera.
Pricing and Availability
The NEX-5R will be available this October in silver, black and white. It will cost about $650 for the body-only version and about $750 with an 18-55mm zoom lens. For additional information visit Sony’s blog.
