Sony NEX users, rejoice. The firmware upgrade we were promised at Photokina is available for download today. The upgrade will allow use of auto focus when the NEX-3 or NEX-5 is coupled to an Alpha lens by way of LA-EA1 mount adapter. Previously, these lenses could only be used with manual focus.

The new firmware will also make these updates:

  • Aperture Priority mode can now be used in video recording.
  • Soft keys on the camera’s back panel can now be assigned custom functions. The user can set these keys to Shooting Mode, Shooting Tips, Precision Digital Zoom, ISO, White Balance, Metering Mode, Flash Compensation, DRO, Auto HDR, Creative Style, MF Assist and AF Area.
  • A change to the menu start options. Pressing the “menu” button will bring up either the most recently-used setting or the main menu screen depending on the user’s preference.
  • MF assist mode will now recall previously-used settings in an effort to make it quicker and more convenient.

The firmware upgrade is free and available for download from Sony Europe.
