Size matters, and when it comes to action cams, the smaller you go, the better. No stranger to this knowledge, Sony has just performed a shrink-down makeover on its mini cam lineup and is introducing the aptly-named Action Cam Mini.
At two-thirds the size of Sony’s previous standard bearer in the diminutive action cam league, the Action Cam Mini isn’t just measurably smaller than its AS100V predecessor. It’s also been ruggedized for better performance in the wet and wild outdoors.
Engineered with a splash-proof exterior, wearers of the mini cam can now record their daring exploits sans waterproof casing for activities like skiing or biking in muddy terrain. Foreseeing the demand for optimal performance in even more intensive environments, the Action Cam Mini comes with a supplemental protective case that lets the camera be submerged in water, dust, or sand for up to five meters (or about 16 feet).
The camera has an 11.9 megapixel Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor and ultra-wide angle filming is made possible through a 170-degree lens. Both 720p and 1080p recording are supported, and a stereo mic enables high-quality audio.
The Mini is compatible with all of the AS100V’s accessories and will be available on October 19 for $250. For $350, shoppers can also score a kit that comes with a waterproof live-view remote capable of controlling a number of mini cam functions.
