Panasonic announces details of the TS4 and TS20 rugged cameras today. The Lumix TS4 is the more feature-rich model, offering full 1080 HD video, GPS function and a more thoroughly ruggedized build. Both models feature folded-optic designs and a 2.7-inch LCD.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS4
In addition to GPS tracking, the TS4 will offer a 12.1 megapixel CCD sensor, a 4.6x optical zoom lens and a 3.7 fps burst shooting mode. This generation of Panasonic’s in-camera GPS technology incorporates map data that users can pull from a bundled DVD, offering over a million landmarks and maps for 82 different regions.
But who buys a camera like the TS4 for its personality? It’s really all about the rugged qualities. And the TS4 has those in spades – waterproof up to 40 feet, shockproof to 6.6 feet, freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit and sealed against dust. For the enthusiast shooter, the TS4 will offer manual shooting modes.
Panasonic Lumix TS20
The TS20 is a slight step down in terms of features and rugged functionality. It is waterproof to 16 feet and shockproof to 5 feet with the same dust and freezeproof capabilities of the TS4. It will offer 720p video, a 4x optical zoom lens and a 16.1 megapixel sensor. It uses Panasonic’s Mega O.I.S. optical image stabilization.
Pricing and availability
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS4 will be available in mid-March for $399.99. The Lumix DMC-TS20 becomes available in February for $179.99.
