Olympus announces the “Lite” E-PL1s for Japanese camera shoppers. The new model will be available for purchase December 4 2010 as a kit with a new M Zuiko Digital 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II zoom lens, claiming to be the world’s lightest zoom lens. The E-PL1s is also equipped with ISO settings up to 6400, where the EPL1 is only expandable up to 1600.

Since the introduction of the E-P1, Olympus has fought back criticism that the PEN systems are too slow to auto focus. A firmware update and a new, faster lens later, the E-PL1 is decidedly more capable than those first generation E-P1’s with pancake lenses. The E-PL1s is positioned for the Japanese market as a small, lightweight and speedy camera. DCR even tested the E-PL1 at the US Open, pitting it against the heat coming off Venus Williams’s racquet. Take a look at how it fared in our On Assignment article.
