Just about the right size for Santa’s elves, this small, pocketable camera might be a great little stocking stuffer. Headed to a holiday party? Throw it in your wristlet or jacket pocket and you’ll be ready to capture all the fun. Drink a little too much eggnog, though, and you just might misplace it.
Branded as the “smallest Coolpix” camera, Nikon was not kidding. Weighing a mere 3.4 oz and measuring only 2.1″x3.1″x0.7″ it is the tiniest camera I have ever held. Its miniscule physique will have everyone saying, “Oh, that’s cute.” Designed for a point and shooter who’s on the go, this camera can fit into even the smallest jean pockets. It is packed with a 10.1 CCD sensor, 3x zoom and a 2.5″ LCD screen that encompasses nearly the entirety of the camera’s back. The S01 can even take 720p HD videos at 30fps. ISO sensitivity ranges from 80-1600.
Housed within the touchscreen display are most of the cameras limited functions. A touch of the screen will easily allow you to take a picture or review your images. Want to utilize one of the five in-camera editing options? Well, that’s a little tricky. The editing feature is counter intuitive and takes some getting used to. Also, the editing feature works as an “after capture” option. You have to take the photo first and then select the type of edit you desire.
The 3x optical zoom translates to 29-87mm equivalent, which isn’t bad for a $100 camera. The camera’s lens is made of Nikkor glass and has an aperture range of f/3.5-5.9. No need to fuss with a memory card; the S01 comes with 7.3 GB of internal memory.
The Nikon S01 includes electronic vibration reduction. The contrast-detect TTL autofocus is fast enough in outdoor lighting, but can be a bit slow in low light. Luckily the camera has a small built-in flash for those tricky lighting situations. As an added bonus, the camera has 7 scene modes which includes a scene auto selector. This allows the camera to do the thinking for you. That way you can sit back, relax and simply hit the shutter.
The Nikon S01 is designed for an on-the-go photographer who doesn’t have time for messing with all those frivolous camera buttons. It’s easy to carry and possibly easier to misplace. Make sure to keep it around your wrist or in a pocket, but don’t forget to take it out when you do your laundry.
The street price for the Nikon Coolpix S01 is $100. This price also includes a strap, USB cable and an AC adapter/charger.
