The Fujifilm Finepix S6000fd is Fujifilm’s first camera with their new facial detection system. The 6.3 megapixel camera is loosely based on the previous S5200 model and includes a 10.7x optical zoom lens and 2.5 inch LCD. Until we publish a full review (coming soon), here are our first impressions.
The S6000fd is styled like a smaller digital SLR, but the lens can’t be detached. It does, however, use a manual zoom ring to traverse the 28-300mm (35mm equivalent) focal length range and there is also a manual focus ring on the lens barrel. The rubberized grip on the camera accomodates 4 AA batteries and allows you to hold this heavier camera comfortably.
In addition to the 2.5 inch, 235K pixel LCD, there is also an electronic viewfinder (EVF) that you can use if conditions don’t allow easy use of the LCD. The EVF is a 0.33 inch, 115K pixel screen provides 100% coverage of the shot.
The S6000fd has plenty of shooting modes, for a wide range of expertise levels. In addition to auto mode and 15 scene modes, you’ll find the complement of manual exposure modes as well. Program auto, aperture priority, shutter priority, and full manual modes are easily accessible via the mode dial.
Fujifilm cameras (and their Real Photo Technology) are known for their low-light performance. The Super CCD sensor allows you to shoot at a much higher ISO and provide low "noise" results than other Point and Shoot cameras. The S6000fd is able to shoot at sensitivities up to ISO 3200.
So far, I’m really enjoying the camera. It has the flexibility to shoot in a very wide range of conditions once you figure out what settings you need for a particular shot. Battery life seems to be very good as well. Image quality is also very good – with good color, exposure, and detail. I also like having the manual zoom ring. While it may take some getting used to if you’re used to a smaller point and shoot, it has the feel of a nice Digital SLR lens. That, and you can use the 10.7x optical zoom during movie capture since there is no zoom motor noise.
