It may not really matter to most digital camera owners, but there are quite a few companies that are involved with their camera “behind the scenes”. One of those companies is Fotonation. Fotonation is an independent provider of embedded imaging and communications solutions for the digital imaging industry. Their red eye reduction technology is used by a wide range of camera manufacturers and they’ll be showing off a new software-based dust reduction technology at Photokina next week.
Fotonation’s red eye correction and reduction technology exists in 50 million digital cameras. You’ll find their solutions in Kodak, Nikon, Pentax, Sanyo, and Samsung cameras. According to IDC, 164 million cameras, with greater than 4 megapixel resolution, have been shipped since 2004. Using this number, Fotonation has a 30% share of this market segment.
Next week, at Photokina, Fotonation will be demonstrating their new patented dust removal technology. Using in-camera software, the technology can differentiate between specks of dust and the actual image details. It uses this information to create a map of the dust areas to remove the spots automatically. Their technology has been built to scale across different devices, from digital cameras to camera phones.
