Getting into Fuji's latest high-style ultracompact, the Fujifilm FinePix Z100fd, just got a little easier: Fuji announced this week that it's lowering the Z100fd's MSRP to a very budget friendly $199.95.
The middle of the month has rolled around again, meaning it's time for another comparison courtesy of DCR's Head to Head series. In this month's bout, two high-end, wide-zoom compacts - the Fujifilm FinePix F100fd and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX35 - head into the ring for a wide-angle smackdown of epic proportions: "Two cameras enter, one camera leaves!" Or something...
Fujifilm's F series compact digitals with the Super CCD sensor have enjoyed a reputation for better than average high ISO noise performance dating back to at least the F30. When the F50fd got a healthy boost in sensor resolution on the same-sized sensor, noise performance slipped a bit, at least by Fuji standards. Now the F50fd has been joined by the Fujifilm FinePix F100fd, and the question on the minds of many Fuji fans is whether the new model - with a current-generation sensor and new processor - will restore the FinePix line to its former prominence as the undisputed low-light leader.
The last few days have been chock full of new digital camera releases from several major players, and things only got more exciting as yesterday turned into this morning. To make your life easy, a quick run-down of the biggest pre-PMA releases to this point - including a brand-new Canon Digital Rebel, flagship ultra-zooms from Fujifilm and Olympus, and a new Sony touch screen model - is all right here.
Fujifilm disclosed a new addition to its S series with the top-of-the-line FinePix S100FS (film simulation). Touted as Fuji's most advanced digital camera to date, the 11 megapixel, 14.3x zoom S100FS is an SLR-like shooting tool that brings manual controls and other advanced features to users looking for more functionality and flexibility.
The Fujifilm FinePix S1000fd is billed by the manufacturer as the world's smallest digital camera with a 12x zoom. Replacing the popular FinePix S700, the 10 megapixel S1000fd covers an impressive 35mm-equivalent range of 33-396mm, and features a hi-res 2.7-inch LCD.
The third release in Fujifilm's trifecta of new ultra-zooms, the FinePix S8100fd's main attraction is its 18x zoom with wide-angle shooting capability. Combining full manual and advanced automatic features, Fuji promotes the S8100fd as a DSLR substitute, and with a range that covers an equivalent 27 to 486 mm, we're inclined to see the cost advantages (have you priced the three DSLR lenses you'd need to cover this kind of distance?), at least, of this proposition.
Not to be outdone by Fuji's barrage of ultra-zoom announcements, the 12 megapixel Fujifilm FinePix F100fd is the latest iteration in the company's F series of advanced compact digicams. Built around an eigth-generation Fuji Super CCD sensor, the F100fd is expected to deliver the kind of impressive low light/high ISO performance that users have come to expect from these cameras. Other physical specs include a 2.7-inch, 230,000-pixel wide-angle view LCD, as well as a Fujinon 5x optical zoom.
