In a move sure to appeal to consumers who like to use digital SLRs but don't like to carry a lot of glass, Pentax is announcing the smc Pentax DA 18-250mm F3.5-6.3ED AL lens. The lens provides an approximate 14x optical zoom (equivalent to a 27.5 - 383mm lens on a 35mm camera), so can cover a wide variety of shooting conditions - from wide angle group portraits to long zoom nature photography. The 18-250mm lens will be available in October for $500.
Pentax has added another website to it's growing family of mini-sites. The new one is www.pentaxian.com, celebrating the self-appointed label that Pentax photographers use to describe themselves.
Pentax Imaging has launched a web site just to show off the work of Pentaxians around the world. The new site, www.pentaxphotogallery.com, was designed for Pentax photographers by Pentax Imaging, setting it apart from the other photo sharing sites that are almost ubiquitous.
Pentax is starting their yearly refresh of their Optio digital camera line with the Optio M40 and Optio E40. The 8 megapixel M40 features a slim, metal body, face detection and digital shake reduction. The 8 megapixel entry level Optio E40 takes AA batteries and also has face detection and digital shake reduction. The Pentax Optio M40 will be available in August 2007 for $199 and the Pentax Optio E40 will be available in September for $149.
Pentax has announced a follow-up to their K100D digital SLR that was announced last year. The Pentax K100D Super incorporates just a few new features (Dust Removal and support for Supersonic Drive Motor lenses), but it's essentially the same camera as the K100D.
The latest entry level model in Pentax's extensive line of point & shoot digital cameras is the Optio E30. As with any digital camera, there are pros and cons. This particular camera is considered "entry level", with a straighforward feature set, low price and ease of use as its selling points. Bottom line, the Optio E30 is great for those consumers getting their first digital camera.
Pentax announced two new additions to their Optio line today. The Pentax Optio A30 is their "advanced" model that replaces the A20. It features 10 megapixels of resolution, a high resolution 2.5 inch LCD, 3x optical zoom, and CCD-shift image stabilization. The Pentax Optio W30 updates their line of waterproof digital cameras and shoots at 7.1 megapixels with a 3x optical zoom and 2.5 inch LCD.
Pentax has announced the Optio T30 and Optio M30 digital cameras to succeed the T20 and M20 (respectively). Both new cameras features a new facial recognition feature to provide accurate auto focus and auto exposure on the faces in your frame. Both cameras will be available in March with the T30 for $350 and the M30 will be available for $200.
Pre-CES - Pentax is "breaking the seal" on what will probably be a rash of digital camera announcements surrounding this year's CES (Consumer Electronics Show). The 7.1 megapixel Pentax Optio E30 is an entry level model that accepts AA batteries, has a 3x optical zoom and a 2.4 inch LCD. The E30 will be available in February for $149.95.
Pentax and Hoya have announced a merger where, effective on October 1, 2007, they will be known as the Hoya Pentax HD Corporation. By joining forces, they seek to use their strengths to establish better value for the shareholders. Fortunately, it doesn't look like this involving digital cameras will actually change that much.
