The NEX-5T camera is Sony's first ILC to feature NFC, allowing a more connected experience with compatible Android smartphones and tablets. Users without NFC enabled devices can wirelessly transfer images and videos through use of Wi-Fi and Sony's PlayMemories Mobile app, which is available for both the iOS and Android platforms. There are 15 apps currently available, including "Direct Upload," which allows photos to be uploaded directly to Facebook and Flickr. Other applications include "Motion-shot" and "Time-Lapse" to name a few.

The NEX-5T has a 16.1-megapixel APS HD CMOS sensor paired with Sony's BIONZ image processor. It has an ISO range of 100- 25600. The camera can record both JPEG and RAW still image files. The camera also records full HD video which is recorded in AVCHD and MP4 files.

As with the NEX-5R model, the NEX-5T also offers Fast Hybrid auto focus. It combines phase-detection and contrast-detection to ensure faster and better focusing in a variety of environments. The camera has 99 phase-detection points. It will also use contrast-detection AF for precise focusing. In Speed Priority mode, the camera will switch automatically to phase detection tracking AF to track fast-moving action accurately for up to 10 fps.

The NEX-5T camera features programmable control dial and Fn (function) button. The camera has a 3-inch touch-screen LCD with 921,600 dots of resolution. It can flip 180 degrees for either high-angle shots or fantastic selfies. The screen also has a touch-shutter function for added convenience.
