What are the Best Photo Apps? Repix

by Reads (879)

If you’ve ever looked at a photograph of yourself and thought that you’d look great as an artist’s charcoal rendering — or maybe just wanted to remove a blemish here and there, or find out what you might look like as a cartoon character — then you might be interested in a little app called Repix.

Essentially a remix tool for your smartphone pics, Repix is a combination editor/filter/effects app that lets you get all funky and artistic with freshly snapped pics or anything else you’ve got saved in your smartphone gallery. Functionality ranges from simplistic to high level and you’re really only limited by your own creativity.

There are simple controls for brightness, contrast, saturation, vibrance, temperature, and vignette. You can also apply a variety of aspect ratios or customize your own, and you can overlay special filters and frames to your snapshots. But where things get really interesting are the effects brushes that you can use to add flares, rain drips, charcoal effect, and a handful of other interesting tweaks.

The only bummer here is that you have to pay extra to unlock some of the better brush effects — effects labeled with such enticing names as VanGogh, Hollywood, Bokeh and Glow Smoke. On a positive note, you’re not forced to spend money to discover if the effect you’re thinking of paying for will do what you want it to do. Repix lets you test the premium tools on a stock image so you know what you’re getting before you even crack open your virtual wallet.

None of this is to imply that the freebie version of Repix isn’t worth downloading and playing with. There’s actually a lot you can do without spending a dime. To start with, you get about half a dozen frames and around twice as many brush and color tools with which to fiddle around. Operation of these tools is as simple as choosing one, then dragging your finger across the screen to watch it work. There are easily identifiable undo and redo controls, and a useful reset control to revert to the original image. Finalized images can then be saved and shared via email, messenger, and social media platforms.

Repix is available as a free download for Android devices running 4.0 and up, as well as iOS devices operating on 7.0 or later.
