What are the Best Photo Apps? Lensical

Next time you look at a digital snapshot of your eight-year-old kid and wonder what he’d look like as a 90-year-old man, or want to see what you’d look like with an obvious combover, think of Lensical, a nifty iOS app that can take “normal” photos and do totally bizarre and sometimes disturbing things with them.

LensicalUpon installation, Lensical asks for access to your photo library. Which, of course, you should agree to even if it’s not altogether required. With the app, you can take new pictures with your iOS device or import existing ones with which to go nutso.

Straight off the bat, you’re given access to a respectable supply of filters that run the gamut from Impression (which turns your subject into an impressionist artistic rendering) to Blackboard (which imbues your images with that classic “Take On Me” look). You can also opt to bypass these filters and go straight for the heart of the fun, accessing an impressive laundry list of facial edits — edits with such intriguing names as Ages, Facial Hair, Weight, Bald, and Monster.

The results of these effects are actually a lot more impressive than you might imagine without either testing it out or looking at sample screenshots. When you apply an effect, the app reads the photo and places the requested effect in the right location, eliminating the need to adjust the positioning of a handlebar mustache on your wife, or a severely receding hairline her. You can apply Ages to automatically age your photo subject to about 90 years old, give them a nice chrome dome or alternative combover, throw about 200 extra pounds on them, or make them look like something out of a zombie flick.

Of course, there’s always room for improvement and this is why you’re given the option of tweaking the superimposed effect to your liking by adjusting the location of the effects on your photo. Once saved, you can share your masterful creation with the world via email, iCloud, social media, or SMS. If you’re feeling particularly devious, you can even click Assign to Contact so that you can have a private laugh at the expense of everyone in your address book.

If all this sounds like too much fun to be ignored, you can find out for yourself by downloading Lensical from iTunes for free. Once downloaded you’ll be given the opportunity to make additional in-app purchases (surprise!) but at least up until the moment you decide to fork over additional dollars, you can perform quite a few interesting experiments.

In-app purchases that unlock additional ranges of ages, facial hair styles, weights in excess of 600 pounds, and other monstrous distortions run from 99 cents to about $2 apiece. Lensical requires iOS 7.0 or later and has been optimized for iPhone 5. It’s also compatible with your iPad or iPod touch.
