This year, however, CES is on the heels of Photokina, the world’s premier photography and imaging fair. What this means for photo enthusiasts is a possible decline in the number of high end cameras that will be introduced in Vegas.
Photokina brought us the Nikon D600 — an entry level DSLR with a full-frame sensor and 24.3-megapixels. With a price tag of about two grand, it is far more affordable than it’s full-frame siblings in Nikon’s line up of flagship cameras. We also saw the introduction of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1. This little beauty has the same megapixel count as the D600, but is housed in a compact 4.5-inch body and boasts a f/2 fixed 35mm Carl Zeiss lens.
With this many new cameras unveiled at Photokina, what will be left for CES?
Our hunch is that we will see a plethora of compact cameras aimed at the average consumer. Look for upgrades like better image stabilization and more Wi-Fi compatible devices. Also, look for compact cameras with greater zoom lengths.
Say goodbye to the entry level Point and Shoot camera. Smartphone cameras have all but replaced the low end point and shoots. Since we no longer need to carry two devices that can photograph at an acceptable level, camera companies need to produce a product that renders better images with greater capabilities and less user error.
