  Smallest,lightest,least expensive slr...period. Raises the bar for Canon for sure.

PROS: For being a true SLR and not a Prosumer digital point and shoot, its tiny size and feather light weight along with its tiny price, make it a real joy to buy and use.It really Can be used just like a point and shoot. Heck, my 76 year old mother can use it and take great pics. The included kit lens is awesome and all an average user will probably ever need. Add the new 55-200mm VR lens to it for 250 bucks and you have a great setup to cover just about any photo opportunity.It has most of the settings of a pro slr, all be it a little harder to adjust with the touch pad. But if you need to, the settings ARE there. Takes Better pics than a camera costing 5 grand just a few years back. Battery life is tremendous. You will have a hard time using up a charge in a day of shooting.Takes outstanding pictures, that compare to any camera (10mp) out there for less than half their price..Nikon got it right by not going with the "More Megapixals equal better pictures" crowd and kept this camera affordable. Besides any one that knows anything knows That unless you need to blow a pic up beyond 16x20, 6mp is plenty of resolution.How many photos have you blown up to frame that big? me either. MP beyond that only add more opportuniy for noise, not resolution. And Besides, If you want 10mp Nikon added the 40x. to compete (unnecessary in my opinion) with the EOS. This camera is the best value in SLR going by a long shot.

CONS: Hmmm. Hard to think of anything major. The camera over exposes a tiny bit On factory setting. But is easily corrected.

PROS: Image quality, value, ergonomics, compact yet comforable, excellent viewfinder... the list goes on.

CONS: It's Achilles heel - lack of legacy lens support

  Perfect Choice for Those Moving Up from Point-and Shoot

PROS: Price, Size, Weight, Photo Quality, Lens, LCD and Menus

CONS: Bad software, AF can lag under certain shooting conditions

  Terrible with Noise at low light

PROS: Very compact, Very light, very good menu system, nice big LCD

CONS: Not so good with Noise at High ISO in low lighting, kit lens isn't very good

  Good stepping stone into the dSLR market

PROS: Image quality; speed (somewhat); Presdes for dummies; Assistance for newbs; Portability/size

CONS: Only three autofocus areas; no built-in AF motor, 10 MP would be nicer; A few more programmable butons would be nice

  Excellant DSLR - One of the best

PROS: Great AUTO settings w/plenty of manual controls & has many of the D80 features

CONS: As an "entry" level dSLR and even compared to higher priced dSLRs the D40 has no real cons although it does overexpose slighty which is easily compesated for.

CONS: autofocus does not work with some older lenses

CONS: None that need mentioning. If you want superfast get a D200.
