Designed for APS-C DSLR cameras, the latest 18-200mm F.3-6.3 DC OS HSM macro lens from Sigma is lighter and boasts a smaller profile than its predecessor. The new 18-20mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM lens measures just 2.8 x 3.4 inches and weighs .95 pounds compared to the previous model, which measured in at 3 x 3.5 inches and weighed just under 1.1 pounds.
Optimized for close up photography, the Sigma 18-200mm lens boasts a minimum focusing distance of 15.4 inches with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3. This is increased from the previous model, which featured a minimum focusing distance of 17.7 inches and max magnification ratio of 1:3.8.
The lens is designed with close up photography in mind, with best results in natural light setting with a minimum working distance of 14.7 inches. Sigma also included Special Low Dispersion technology in the updated 18-200mm lens, which the company states utilizes "...glass elements that have a high refractive index and can correct chromatic aberration at the telephoto-end."
Sigma attributes both the lens' compact design and distortion correction to the company's use of aspherical lens elements in the design as well as the inclusion of a double-sided aspherical lens. The 18-200mm lens also utilizes Sigma's Hyper Sonic Motor technology, which allows for quiet high-speed autofocusing. In addition to the HSM technology, Sigma included Super Multi-Layer Coating on the lens, which the company states reduces flare and ghosting.
Sigma has not yet announced pricing or availability for the lens, but the company will have the lens on display at its booth during CES 2014 in Las Vegas. We will bring you more images and a first look once we have our booth tour!
