Have you always dreamed of owning a Blad, but love the convenience of a point-and-shoot? Well, today is your lucky day! Hasselblad announced the addition of the Stellar. The Stellar enters the camera scene as the only direct competition to the Sony RX100.
It's pretty much the same camera as the RX100 plus the addition of a controversial (and potentially deal breaking) pistol grip. If the makers of the Stellar wanted to set the camera apart visually from the Sony RX100 they have reached their goal. Here's the thing, the RX100 is on the brink of not being pocketable without a grip. Adding the additional grip to the Stellar guarantees that this camera will not be gracing the pockets of any photographers I know. Also, I'm just not sure the whole wood grain styling is cutting it. The black and grey Stellar (shown below) is the least flamboyant of the group.
Rumors are circulating that the Hasselblad Stellar will retail for quite a bit more than the Sony RX100. So what do you think? Is the additional cost worth the Hasselblad logo? Does throwing an "H" on the front of this camera make it any better than the RX100?
I'm not sure if the makers of the Stellar were shooting for the stars or completely out of this world (and their minds) when they created it. Yes, the Sony RX100 is selling like hotcakes, and yes, the partnership with Sony has made the Stellar a reality, but creating an identical camera with a higher price tag makes you an overpriced copycat, not a digital imaging icon.
Call me traditional, but I really prefer the Blads of days gone by. There's just something about them. Unfortunately, the Stellar does not conjure the same feelings that I get from a well-worn Hasselblad.
We'll let you know when Hasselblad announces a price for the Stellar. Until then, let us know what you think about the new Stellar in our forums. We would love to hear from you.
