The Panasonic GF5 was unveiled today with a new sensor and a re-tooled Venus Engine processor. Enhancements to noise reduction systems have been made, and an advanced Scene Guide mode will offer new auto shooting options.
Joining the Lumix G-Series Micro Four Thirds team is the GF5, bringing a new (but not higher-res) sensor to the table along with an updated Venus Engine image processor. It will employ a 12.1 megapixel Live MOS imager and a 3.0-inch 920k-dot touch panel LCD. Touch functions such as Touch Shutter, Zoom and Focus are all available. A Pinpoint AF function will enlarge a focus area so that a precise target may be set. Additionally, full-area AF is now available to shooters, allowing the user to set a focus point anywhere in the frame. Per usual, 1080 HD video is offered at 60i AVCHD or 30p with MP4 file output.
A new Scene Guide mode presents the beginning shooter with 23 sample images – the user can select the scene that best matches the one she’s trying to capture, and the camera will optimize settings for that particular situation. The GF5 will even suggest appropriate lens options for the scene.
The GF5 will be loaded with 14 different in-camera processing filters, adding to the previously available six with options like “Cross Process” and “One Point Color.” An improved noise-reduction system is also in place, a combination of “3DNR” (that’s 3D Noise Reduction) and MNR (Multi-process Noise Reduction) that treats noise in shadows and highlights separately.
