Sony announces a new folded-optic, T-series point-and-shoot today. Cutting a stylish profile, the Cyber-shot TX200V is water and dustproof, offers an OLED touch display and a new 18.2 megapixel (!) CMOS sensor.
Yes, we have arrived at the 18 megapixel point-and-shoot. The TX200V will also offer 1080p HD video capture, a new Optical Steadyshot Active Mode and a 5x optical zoom lens. Sony claims to have reduced AF time even in poor light conditions to a mere 0.13 seconds. All of this is wrapped up in a shiny new reinforced glass design, waterproof to 16 feet, freezeproof to 14 degrees and dustproof.
The rugged little TX200 has a 3.3-inch OLED touch screen on the back panel. The new BIONZ processor behind the wheel offers some updates to noise reduction technology, and a new Dual Record function will allow the capture of 13 megapixel stills during 1080 video recording.
Who says the megapixel wars are over? We now have a point-and-shoot sensor with more pixels than a full-frame DSLR. Sony has some new noise reduction technology at work in the TX200 - let's hope it's up to the task.
Pricing and availability
The TX200V should arrive in March 2012. When it debuts, expect it to cost about $500.
