Minimalist Samsung MV800 Offers Flexible LCD

Samsung's newest ultracompact is the MV800, set apart from the competition with a flip-out LCD. The 3.0-inch touchscreen can be tilted, twisted or flipped on top of the camera for easier self-portrait framing.

The 16.1 megapixel MV800 also offers a wide angle 26mm 5x optical zoom lens. It uses a dual image stabilization mechanism, combining digital and optical systems to reduce blur. Equipped with 720p HD video recording, the MV800 also offers 14 art-filter processing modes in camera.

The new screen design mimics the function of Samsung's earlier DualView cameras. More customers want to turn the camera on themselves for self portraits, Samsung reps say, and having a front-facing LCD to aid with composition eliminates the need to guess. Earlier this year, Casio took a similar cue with the Tryx, a non-traditional compact with a frame that can act as the camera's own tripod.

We took a brief hands-on look at a pre-production MV800 model at a Samsung press briefing yesterday afternoon. The camera is very slim, especially when the LCD is flipped on top of the front of the camera. It's shockingly minimalist - just two buttons adorn the back panel. It does, however, seem fairly sturdy and, like the Tryx it, acts as its own tripod quite nicely. Time will tell if consumers and retailers warm up to unusual frame designs.
