Nikon Announces Nikkor AF-S 50mm F/1.8G lens

Nikon has announced the Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.8G lens, a compact, prime lens that combines the versatility of a 50mm focal length and the benefits of a fast aperture for photos and movies.

The new lens aims to produces sharp, high-resolution images and has the ability to focus as close as 1.48 feet (0.45 meters), with excellent depth of field control. The lens also features Nikon's Silent Wave Motor, which ensures fast, quiet auto focus operation, which is especially important when recording movies. While the lens is optimized for Nikon's large sensor FX format cameras such as the D3x or D700 it can also be used with Nikon's popular DX format cameras such as the D3100, D5100 or D7000.

Other important features of the new lens include the following:

• A maximum aperture of f/1.8 and a minimum aperture of f/16.
• Lens construction of seven elements in six groups, with one aspherical lens element to reduce instances of coma and aberration, even when shooting with a wide open aperture.
• A rounded diaphragm opening which, combined with the seven-blade aperture contributes to a substantially more circular bokeh for a more natural appearance of out-of-focus background elements.
• Nikon's Super Integrated Coating which reduces lens flare and chromatic aberration.
• Quick switching between manual and auto focus modes. 
• Dimensions of 2.1 inches (52.4mm) long and 2.8 inches (72.1mm) in diameter.
• Weight of 6.6 ounces (185 grams)
• A 58mm snap-on front lens cap, rear lens cap, lens hood and lens pouch.

The Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.8G lens is scheduled to be available for purchase beginning June 16, 2011, at an estimated selling price of $219.95.
