The FX78 brings a fast f/2.5 lens and a large 3.5-inch touchscreen together in a sleek and compact package.
The large 16:9 touchscreen allows for touch shutter, touch AF and touch zoom operation. A 24mm wide angle lens has a 5x optical zoom range and a fairly wide f/2.5 maximum aperture. The 12.1 megapixel CCD sensor offers full 1080 HD video recording.
Also included is a new 3D mode. It will capture 20 images at high speed and then select two to automatically combine into one 3D image. A 3D HDTV is necessary to view images to full effect.
The FX78 follows the Lumix FX75, a compact point-and-shoot introduced with an f/2.2 lens and a 3.0-inch touchscreen. We gave the FX75 a positive review, noting average low-light performance and a slow maximum aperture at telephoto. For this iteration, Panasonic does away with the physical buttons on the back panel and puts almost all camera controls in the FX78's touch-operated menus.
Pricing and availability
