Canon offers three refreshes to their advanced PowerShot lineup today with the S95, SD4500 and SX130 advanced point-and-shoots. The new crop of cameras offer light performance upgrades to their predecessors.
Canon PowerShot S95 IS
The PowerShot S95 won't offer much of a departure from the PowerShot S90. The most notable addition to the 10 megapixel, f/2.0 shooter is HD 720p video. The S95 will be equipped with an HDMI port and stereo sound recording. It's also the first PowerShot to feature in-camera high dynamic range processing. With use of a tripod, the S95 will capture three successive images and combine them into one image with a wider apparent dynamic range.
All other specs remain unchanged. The advanced yet slender PowerShot S90 and its successor pack features like a 28mm wide angle lens, Digic IV image processor and RAW image capture.
Canon PowerShot SX130 IS
Canon didn't change much to the PowerShot SX210's existing platform. It's been a popular model for Canon, and they've kept in step with a tradition of incremental updates to existing systems. The PowerShot SX130 will offer a 12x optical zoom (compared to the SX120's 10x zoom). It features a 12 megapixel sensor, a pixel increase from the 10 megapixel SX130. That 12x lens offers a wide 28mm angle out to 336mm equivalent at telephoto.
The SX130 will also offer a 3.0-inch LCD and optical image stabilization. The system is powered by AA batteries. Like the other models announced today, it will record 720p HD video. The SX130, like the S95, will have stereo audio inputs.
Canon Powershot SD4500 IS
The SD4500 is the first digital ELPH to get 1080p HD video recording. It offers a 10x optical zoom and high speed capture up to 240 fps in slow motion mode. It uses a new Dynamic IS mode to help keep images stable as the camera user walks while recording video.
Like the SD4000 preceding it, the SD4500 has a 10 megapixel High Sensitivity CCD sensor for, as Canon claims, better performance in low light situations.
Pricing and availability
The Canon PowerShot S95 will cost $399.99, the SX130 will cost $249.99 and the SD4500 will cost $349.99. The S95 and SX130 become available in late August and the SD4500 is slated to follow in early September.
