Sony Unveils NEX-VG10 Interchangeable Lens Camcorder

Built on the technology introduced with the NEX digital cameras, the NEX-VG10 will feature the same Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor found on the NEX-5 and NEX-3 digital cameras. It will also be compatible with the same E-mount lenses that work with those devices. In addition, the NEX-VG10 will feature Sony's Bionz processor for reduced grain in low-light shooting situations and 14 megapixel still images, or near DSLR-quality photos. Sony claims their Exmor sensor is 19.5 times bigger than the standard sensor found on other camcorders.

High Definition Camcorder
Expect full 1920x1080 HD video at 24 megabits per second, which equates to Blu-ray image quality. The NEX-VG10 will ship with an E-mount 18-200mm lens with 11x optical zoom and optical image stabilization. Additional E-mount lenses will be available at launch as well as an adapter for A-mount lenses that also work with Sony Alpha DSLR cameras.

A Sound Camcorder
On the sound side, the NEX-VG10 will sport a Quad Capsule Spatial Array Microphone that records stereo sound from four distinct areas, minimizing background noise in favor of audio in front of the camera. A standard external audio input - a feature not found on many Sony Handycam camcorders - will also be included.

Rounding out the NEX-VG10 will be a Sony proprietary Alpha hot shoe that doubles as a universal hot shoe, a removable rechargeable battery and an SD/SDHC/SDXC card slot that also accepts Memory Stick cards. A download voucher for Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platnium 10 editing suite will also be included.

The NEX-VG10 is available for preorder now for approximately $2,000, and is expected to ship in September.
