Sony has released a firmware update for its NEX series compact interchangeable lens cameras. The new firmware should provide some improvements to camera performance and will also enable 3D Sweep Panorama functionality.
Sony introduced the 3D Sweep Panorama concept when the alpha NEX-5 and NEX-3 were launched, though the cameras didn't support this function when they were released. By downloading the free firmware upgrade, users will now be able to capture panoramic images that can be displayed with a 3D effect. These 3D images cannot be displayed on the camera's LCD; a 3D capable HDTV is needed.
The upgrade should also improve the function of Sweep Panorama mode when it's used to capture scenes that are occupied by a lot of sea or sky. It should also reduce power consumption when the camera is turned off, and Sony claims that start-up time in low light conditions will be improved.
The firmware update is available at Sony's eSupport website. For a closer look at the alpha NEX-5, read our full review.
