Nikon Inc. has introduced the AF-S DX Micro Nikkor 85mm f/3.5G ED VR lens, a compact, lightweight macro lens designed for Nikon's DX format DSLR cameras such as the D90 and D5000. The new lens has a 1:1 reproduction ratio, so that the image on the sensor is the same size as the actual image. This allows users to get extreme close-ups of intricate textures and details, even down to the fine texture on flower petals or insect wings.
The new Nikkor 85mm lens incorporates several features to improve its operation and image quality. One feature is Nikon's VRII image stabilization system, which compensates for camera shake - a necessity when engaging in close-up photography. Another is Nikon's SWM (Silent Wave Motor), which provides fast, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance. Nikon's IF (Internal Focusing) design further enhances autofocus performance, while also allowing photographers to manually focus quickly and smoothly. Additional benefits to IF design include the elimination of both front lens element rotation and changes in lens length during focusing.
Optical construction of the Nikkor 85mm lens consists of 14 elements in 10 groups, while the addition of an ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element minimizes chromatic aberration (fringing). A rounded nine-blade diaphragm opening allows out-of-focus background or foreground scene information to appear more naturally blurred.
The new Nikkor 85mm lens is scheduled to become available beginning early December 2009 at an estimated selling price of $529.95. We'll be looking for it at the Nikon booth at the PhotoPlus Expo in New York City next week. Additional information can be found at Nikon's website.
