Nikon has taken the wraps off of another entry-level digital SLR, the D3000. It offers a simplified shooting experience to a first-time SLR user with the addition of a newly developed Guide Mode. Featuring a smaller body than the traditional SLR, it boasts a smaller price tag to boot.
The D3000 is equipped with a 10.2 megapixel DX-format CCD sensor, an 11-point AF system and a 3.0 inch LCD. Also present are Nikon's EXPEED image processor and their D-Lighting function, which is designed to bring out details in difficult lighting conditions. The D3000 will offer an ISO range of 100-1600 with an additional boost to a Hi-1 setting of 3200.
Nikon has also developed some new technology for the D3000 to help first-time DSLR users take full advantage of the camera's capabilities. The Guide Mode will offer help in selecting the proper settings based on the needs of a particular scene. It will be available through the mode dial on demand as users need it.
A host of in-camera editing options are available for the D3000 user including filters and retouching tools. Nikon claims that the D3000 will even be able to put together stop-motion videos from collections of images in Stop Motion Movie Mode. The Soft Filter application from the D5000 will also be available, offering a quick way to create a smooth portrait effect.
Though the D3000 is equipped with a pop-up flash, a hot shoe will offer compatibility with wireless lighting options including the SB-900 Speedlight and the SU-800 Wireless Commander.
Pricing and availability
The D3000 will be sold as a kit with the AF-S NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR image stabilization lens starting in late August 2009. Look for it to debut at a very reasonable $599.95.
