Canon has recently released new firmware for its EOS 50D, 450D (a.k.a. the Rebel XSi), and 1000D (Rebel XS) Digital SLR cameras. The new firmware will prepare the cameras for the autofocus assist beam function of the new Speedlite 270 EX flash.
Version 1.0.6 of the firmware for the 50D will also fix a problem with vertical banding noise. The Speedlite 270 EX flashgun is Canon's new entry-level flash to be used with the EOS and PowerShot cameras. The 270 EX has new features such as a zoom head, bounce flash head, and manual flash settings. Powered by two AA batteries, the Speedlite 270 EX is pocket-sized and has fast recharge times. It was released in late March of 2009.
The firmware updates and more information about the Speedlite 270 EX can be found on Canon's web site.
