GE's camera announcements for 2009 begin with a first for the manufacturer – a waterproof camera, the G3WP. The G3WP, the touch-screen E1250TW, and seven others round out the 2009 GE lineup.
Waterproof, touch-screen models
The pool party-friendly G3WP, waterproof up to ten feet, boasts a 12.2 megapixel resolution. It's also equipped with a 4x optical zoom and 2.7 inch LCD, a competitive set of specs in the entry-level point-and-shoot market.
A touch screen model is also featured in GE's product announcement – the E1250TW. It will sport a larger 3.0 inch LCD and HDTV output capability.
All of the models have been brought up to at least the 9 megapixel sensor resolution mark, and several exceed 12 megapixels.
GE's higher zoom flagship model, the X3, will feature a 12x zoom, the strongest in this round of new GE cameras.
Keeping up with the tech curve
GE has also updated this line of cameras and kept up with imaging trends by incorporating automatic scene detection. Another nice tech update is the inclusion of a pan-capture panorama mode, which stitches together a series of three images taken automatically as the shooter pans across a scene.
Two of this year's models, the E1276W and the X3, will feature optical image stabilization in addition to the current image stabilization technology available in every GE camera. Other user-friendly features include blink, smile and face detection.
Pricing and availability
According to GE, the 2009 line should start hitting retail channels next month.
Models in the budget A series are priced from $89.99 for the 5x zoom, 9 megapixel A950, to $129.99 for the 12.2 megapixel A1250. Ultracompact E models are priced from $179.99 to $199.99.
The waterproof G3WP will list at $199.99, while the flagship X3 comes in at a very affordable $229.99.
