In a digicam market that has long been driven by hobbyist photographers, the number of casual snapshooters is on the rise. That's the basic contention of a new market study from research firm InfoTrends.
According to a recently released report entitled "Digital Camera Brand Ownership Trends," casual photographers represent a growing segment of the overall digital camera market, opting to "go digital" in greater numbers now that the digital imaging space has reached technological maturity.
The report as cites a sharp divide in brand preference between casual and hobbyist shooters. While Canon and Nikon continue to dominate the market among those who self-identify as hobbyists, Kodak is the brand of choice for the majority of family photographers: "Although Canon has strengthened its position to close the gap with Kodak, Kodak reigns as the brand of choice among family memory keepers."
In larger terms, the latest InfoTrends report fits with other manufacturer-conducted market research from the past year, which suggests the market for advanced cameras may be topping out.
