Vivitar UK to auction 13,000 new-in-box cameras, camcorders

If you've ever had a desire to buy a pallet's worth of cameras, your opportunity may be coming up sooner than you thought. PhotographyBlog is reporting today that around 13,000 Vivitar cameras and camcorders will be auctioned off beginning later in the month.

According to a press release filed by the agency, property firm King Sturge will be liquidating the assets of Vivitar's now-defunct UK operations, including a huge number of new-in-box products, in an online auction beginning October 14.

Rights to the Vivitar brand were recently acquired from former parent company Syntax-Brillian by Sakar International, the conglomerate behind several well-known franchises including Crayola, Hello Kitty, and the "For Dummies" series of how-to manuals.

With the acquisition of Vivitar, Sakar is announcing plans to expand the brand's presence and market coverage worldwide with a new series of cameras retailing between $70 and $300 – a marked change in approach from Vivitar's former bargain-only branding (according to the Sakar press release, the company's current products retail between $20 and $100).
