RED ready to revolutionize DSLRs?

Unless you've been asleep for the last couple of years, you're probably aware of the splash that California-based cinema camera manufacturer RED has made in the digital video industry.

RED ONE

For the uniniated, the company's $17,500 RED ONE is a pro-grade, completely modular ultra-HD video camera that shoots simply remarkable 12 megapixel (!) movies. Which is to say, 720p is its low-res capture mode – by a long shot.

Jim Jannard, CEO of RED, all but officially announced the company's intent to move into the DSLR space in the near future, suggesting that a RED DSLR may already be well underway. Needless to say, Jannard's forum post on where the company is heading has caused quite the stir over the weekend in the tech community.

Given RED's reliance on in-house technologies and components, it's highly likely that whatever they might launch would be two things: expensive, and unlike anything else out there.

Now Wired magazine's blog is getting in on the action, with a post entitled "The RED DSLR: A Wish List". In the piece, Wired's Charlie Sorrel outlines what we might reasonably expect – and more importantly, what we're all hoping for – in a concise piece that's worth a read if high-res, high-speed DSLRs are your thing.
