DSLR DEALS

Again this week, Circuit City is advertising two of the lowest prices anywhere on two tiny but full-featured entry-level DSLRs.

Nikon D40

Nikon D40

Circuit City has 6.1 megapixel Nikon D40 kit with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens for $469.99 this week, rivaling the lowest prices for this entry-level model seen on the web. Just for good measure, Circuit City will throw in a free printer (after rebate) and a bundle of accessories with your purchase.

OUR TAKE: "The Nikon D40 is the "gateway drug" into the world of digital SLRs. The combination of nice price, high quality and ease of use is certain to lead to SLR addiction." (DCR Review, 1/28/07)

YOUR TAKE: "...its tiny size and feather light weight along with its tiny price, make it a real joy to buy and use." (submitted by Glacialhills)

Olympus E-420

Olympus E-420

Circuit City also has the lowest price we found this week on the tiny Olympus E-420: you can take home the entire kit with the 14-42mm lens today for $529.99. As with most of their sale DSLRs, Circuit City is also giving away a free-after-rebate photo printer, a leather photo album, and a handful of other accessories and offers with your purchase.

OUR TAKE: "Make no mistake about it, the E-420 didn't cut out features or performance on its way to being small." (DCR Review, 4/4/08)

POINT-AND-SHOOT DEALS

Several big box retailers are advertising great deals on Canon cameras in their circulars for this week, but there's nice pricing on some other popular options as well. Here are our picks this week:

Canon PowerShot SD770 IS

Canon PowerShot SD770 IS

Best Buy is running one of the best specials currently available on the Canon PowerShot SD770 IS, selling the black version for $251.99 with free shipping through its website. Although it's not technically a "big box" store deal (in that you can't go to the store and pick it up), the price is too good to ignore.

OUR TAKE: "...for capturing shots with the simplicity and ease that made point-and-shoots so popular in the first place, the latest basic Digital ELPH remains a solid choice." (DCR Review, 6/20/08)

Fujifilm FinePix S1000fd

Fujifilm FinePix S1000fd

Target is advertising the Fujifilm FinePix S1000fd online or in-store for $249.99 this week. We've seen lower prices online for this model, but if you have to have it today, here's your chance to pick up the S1000fd for a fair price at a store near you.

YOUR TAKE: "Perfect for the amatuer and pro alike, stunning picture quality..." (submitted by Primeval Pets)

Canon PowerShot A590 IS

Canon PowerShot A590 IS

The best deal you'll find at Staples this week is on the Canon PowerShot A590 IS. Though the advertised price is a fairly typical $174.99, a $15 instant savings coupon drops your final cost down to $159.99 – a great price for this excellent camera.

OUR TAKE: "To sum the A590 up in a single sentence, as a basic, compact picture taking tool it simply doesn't get much more solid and consistent than this." (DCR Review, 2/21/08)

YOUR TAKE: "For a beginner this camera is definitely the way to go – easy but you can still be creative." (submitted by Dion)

Pentax Optio A40

Pentax Optio A40

Office Depot is listing an incredible buy of $213.95 on the powerful Pentax Optio A40 advanced compact this week. This price represents a significant savings over any online deal we've seen on the A40. If you're shopping for a Pentax, the time to buy is now!

OUR TAKE: "The Pentax Optio A40 is a 12 megapixel compact camera that packs a lot of features." (DCR Review, 4/11/08)
