Phase One pushes the envelope with 60.5 megapixel sensor

Kodak's announcement of a new 50 megapixel sensor slated to appear in the next-generation Hasselblad medium-format digital system was eclipsed today: Denmark-based Phase One has launched a 645 medium-format system, the P 65+, sporting a 60.5 megapixel CCD imager.

Developed in conjunction with DALSA Semiconductor, the P 65+'s 53.9mm x 40.4mm Sensor+ CCD imager is the first full-frame system for medium-format cameras, covering the area of a frame of 645 format film. With a physical area 20 percent larger than the current 39-to-50 megapixel sensors on the market, the Sensor+'s 8984 x 6732 pixels produce an astounding 180MB 8-bit capture.

An impressive claimed dynamic range of 12.5 stops and a one frame per second capture rate round out improvements to Phase One's medium-format digital system.

Like all new high-end medium-format systems, the P 65+ comes at a steep price: pricing for the digital back alone begins at $39,900, with the full system running $41,990. The P 65+ is slated for retail delivery in the last quarter of 2008.
