In order to meet growing demand for the company's DSLRs and compact digital cameras, Canon has announced today its intention to construct a new camera manufacturing facility in Nagasaki, Japan.

According to a press release from Canon, construction on the new plant is expected to begin early next year, with initial operations commencing at the facility before the end of 2009.
When fully complete (by the end of 2010), the new factory will be approximately 137,000 square feet in size and employ around 1,000 workers. Projected investment in the new facility when complete is around $160 million.
Canon anticipates production from the new facility to be around 4 million units annually.
